THE HÔTEL DIEU RETURNS TO THE CARE OF MONTREALERSEstablished, expanded and preserved by 2020 Laureate, the Venerable Jeanne Mance, the Hôtel Dieu de Montréal is one of the first and most durable medical institutions in North America. Jeanne Mance created an enduring legacy of caring for the sick and the wounded, treating all peoples without exclusion. Her unwavering compassion, leadership, and resilience continues to inspire. After more than 350 years, the Hôtel Dieu de Montréal enters a new phase of providing care, as the hospital will soon become a shared public space for all Montrealers. The iconic landmark will find new uses for the different spaces, bringing in social entrepreneurs, artists, students, community organizers, while reserving private living quarters for the dozens of Hospitallers still living there. The first phase of the project will begin this summer with an open call for proposals to care for the site through artistic practice or community gatherings and symposiums. "It's a spirit that remains, so we want that spirit of giving of oneself, of openness, to remain," said Sister Nicole Gaudet, the last Hospitaller to work as a nurse at Montreal's Hôtel-Dieu hospital. |
