Research As A Career Option

What Does A Health Researcher Do?
Medical or health scientists conduct research intended to improve overall human health. They are motivated by curiosity about the unknown and they advance fundamental knowledge about the world.

  • BASIC HEALTH RESEARCH expands our knowledge and understanding of human health. It is driven by a scientist's curiosity as they seek answers to fundamental questions and is often the foundation for major discoveries.

  • TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH takes what's learned in basic research and converts it into practical applications to enhance human health and well being.

Bench to Bedside and Back
Once research shows promise in a laboratory (The Bench), it needs to be tested to see how it works in actual patients (The Bedside). Often this involves CLINICAL STUDIES (clinical trials or observational studies) with human volunteers to add to medical knowledge.

Following completion of your university degree (your undergraduate degree or 'undergrad'), a Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program leads to research opportunities in the medical sciences. Explore these links to find out more.
