What happened after high school?

I ended up going to nursing school for a Licensed Practical Nurse. When I first graduated I was able to start my career in rural obstetrics, gynaecological post-operative care, general internal medicine, and postpartum care. While I found it very educational, I had passion and interests in other areas of nursing. I went on to work in rural long-term care and then proceeded to rural medical/surgical/palliative care. This gave me an amazing base to continue my nursing career and enhance my knowledge. I am now working in an Edmonton emergency department as an LPN, with an interest in pursuing my RN degree. I love my job and I love being able to make an impact on people's lives; even if it’s just a short while.

What do you remember from the Discovery Day event and what impact did it have on you?

I remember that day quite clearly! I had such an amazing and fulfilling experience. My grandfather was an emergency physician at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton; so my curiosity for health sciences started quite early! When I participated in Discovery Days, I had the opportunity to learn about orthopaedics and obstetrics. I was able to take part in a healthcare simulation as well. It was absolutely fascinating to me. Those who spoke and took their time to educate had a major impact on my career path.

Any advice for high school students?

My advice to high school students would be 'You are capable of more than you think you are'. If I had listened to those in my past, I wouldn't be where I am today. Believe in your capabilities. Dream big and ask questions; because the worst thing someone can tell you is no. Opportunity is everywhere in this life.
