Discovery Days in Health Sciences at University of Calgary

Tuesday, November 2, 2021 - Virtual

While so much of our world has changed due to COVID-19, our commitment to outreach and program delivery remains the same. Although we still can't be onsite for an in-person event this year, we invite high school students and teachers to meet us again online to explore careers in medicine and the health sciences.

Our modified virtual half day program begins at 8:30 a.m. and comprises exhibits, a keynote lecture, an interactive workshop and a career panel discussion. As always, participants will have the opportunity to select their own workshop. Please note that, although our delivery model has been adapted temporarily, the program is still considered an individual learning opportunity and workshop spaces continue to be limited. As we have in the past, we ask you to identify Grade 10 - 12 students interested in science to attend the event.

Our virtual event will also include two 15-minute breaks, which will also offer participants an optional "Peer Networking Opportunity". Virtual display ‘booths’ may also be available.

Participants will require access to a computer, headphones, video capabilities (optional), internet connection and a quiet space. This may mean they attend virtually from home that morning or are in front of a computer in a dedicated space at school. Please click on the links below for further details.

A Discovery Day comprises a dynamic keynote lecture, interactive workshops and a career panel discussion.

1. Teachers or Guidance Counsellors must register the school for the event in order to receive updates about the event.

2. Students that are interested in attending should review the workshop catalogue carefully prior to registering as a guest. Workshop spaces are first-come, first-served.

3. On the date indicated below, teachers will receive the registration link that is unique to your school. Please distribute this to the students that have expressed interest.

*Teachers/guidance counsellors are also welcome, but not required to attend. Pre-registration is required

The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame is committed to fostering inclusion and supporting the leadership efforts at Canadian universities to change the diversity pipeline to medicine and the health sciences. We encourage teachers to include students who self-identify as Indigenous, Black or a Person of Colour, or who come from a rural or known disadvantaged socioeconomic background, when considering who will be invited to attend this event.

September 10- October 12

Register your school here. This is an expression of interest and does not obligate you to have students register, nor does it guarantee space will be available when they go online to do so.

October 14 - October 30

Links will be sent out at 12:00 PM (MDT) with complete instructions for individual registration on the aforementioned date. Workshop spaces will be limited. As always, registration is first-come, first served. There will be no limit on the number of students per school this year. However, spaces remain limited in each workshop.

Enthusiastic and engaging presenters are needed! Sign up to host an interactive workshop, take part in our "Health Pros Tell All" panel discussion or set up a virtual display. Please fill out our form below:
