What happened after high school?
After high school, I was fortunate enough to complete my Bachelor of Arts and Science degree at the University of Guelph. This interdisciplinary degree allowed me to explore my love for psychology and the brain while also gaining further knowledge and experience in the science fields. I graduated with specializations in psychology and biology. This unique combination allowed me to combine my personal interests with my love for science, and go on to obtain a Master's degree in Counselling Psychology. This has provided me the opportunity to pursue my passion of giving back to my community and helping others, while also using the knowledge and skills I have gained to improve the health and well-being of the clients I work with.
What do you remember from the Discovery Day event and what impact did it have on you?
I remember the Discovery Day in Health Sciences being very significant in my decision to further my education in the health sciences field. One moment that specifically stands out to me was having the unique opportunity to explore the anatomy lab and examine real human cadavers. While I was somewhat hesitant to enter the lab, I believe this experience peaked my interest in the human body and gave me the confidence to pursue post-secondary education in the health sciences field. Without this experience, I am unsure if I would have chosen to study the subjects I did. I don't know where else I, as a high school student, would have had the chance for such a hands-on learning experience, specifically related to the human body and health sciences.
Any advice for high school students?
I would advise high school students to keep their options open and to take any chance they can to explore the field of study that they are interested in. This will allow them to be confident in their decision for post-secondary education. I think it is so important to choose something you are interested in so that your curiosity and interest will fuel your learning!
