What happened after high school?
After high school, I pursued my three-year Bachelor of Science degree at Western University and Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at the University of Toronto. I discovered my passion for dentistry and desire to improve oral health through volunteering and shadowing at dental clinics. Throughout my journey, I had memorable experiences in extracurricular involvements, including co-founding the Gifts That Smile initiative to provide comprehensive care packages to underserved populations. As a fourth-year dental student, I am excited to be soon able to make a larger impact on oral health in my community.
What do you remember from the Discovery Day event and what impact did it have on you?
I vividly remember meeting passionate high school students from across the province, all with a common interest in healthcare. We had a great time getting to know each other and quickly became good friends. Throughout the day, we got to work together through engaging workshops and problem-solving in various activities. It was amazing being able to feel like a university student for a day, and even perform wet lab work for the first time under the guidance of supportive instructors. Having this exposure to various aspects of the health sciences solidified my desire to be a part of the healthcare field.
Any advice for high school students?
I recommend attending events in various fields early on to find your passion, such as Discovery Days in Health Sciences. Step out of your comfort zone to make friends with students from different schools because they may be your classmate in first-year biology, your neighbour down the hall in residence, or your Soph in university. Ask lots of questions and seek advice from mentors because they have gone through the same paths as you. I am incredibly grateful for all the time and support my mentors have invested in me to enable me to be the person I am today.
