What happened after high school?

Since I was very interested in cognitive processes, human behaviour, and how our environment affects who we are, I pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. I also wanted to gain as many experiences as possible in the healthcare field. I volunteered as a children's ward visitor at my local children's hospital, I worked as a pharmacy assistant in a rural location, and I worked as a receptionist at a medical and dental office. All of these experiences enabled me to get experience interacting with patients and exploring several different aspects of our healthcare system. I knew I wanted to pursue medicine and I was drawn to the lateral mobility and collaborative approach I would have as a Physician Assistant (PA) so I applied to PA school at the University of Manitoba and somehow became one of the 15 people accepted!

What do you remember from the Discovery Day event and what impact did it have on you?

I remember being very impressed with the variety of topics offered. Not only did we have workshops allowing us to explore the many different specialties in medicine, but we also had discussions around imposter syndrome, tips on the application process, and a Q and A period with practicing physicians and nurses. I heard a lot of great advice that day but some of the best advice I heard came from one of the nurses on the panel who encouraged us to keep an open mind and explore as many opportunities as possible. This advice encouraged me to gain many wonderful experiences and reaffirmed my love for medicine. It also gave me the encouragement to apply to PA school, although being a PA wasn't initially on my radar, I'm so glad I kept an open mind and applied anyway! There truly is no other job I would rather do.

Any advice for high school students?

The advice I'd give to high school students is to find and take any opportunity that even mildly interests them. Doing that has given me so much knowledge and skills that I wouldn't have acquired any other way. I would also encourage every high school student with an interest in health sciences to explore as many healthcare careers as possible (even if you're already pretty sure you know what you want to do). There are so many amazing options out there that can be a really wonderful fit for you and your goals.
