What happened after high school?

After graduating high school I completed my bachelor's degree in Health Sciences (BHSc) at Western University. Throughout my undergraduate degree, I developed a greater curiosity for the impact of an individual's environment (social, digital, and built) on their health behaviours. This led me to pursue my master's degree at Western University in Health Information Science. In the program, I was able to narrow my research interests and specifically examine the role of social media in shaping an individual's knowledge of health-related topics. I had the opportunity to complete a thesis with the support of my advisory committee, where I examined communication and credibility tactics of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) influencers on Instagram. I have just recently completed this degree and look forward to applying my skills in a healthcare or media organization.

What do you remember from the Discovery Day event and what impact did it have on you?

Discovery Day in Health Sciences was my first glimpse into what it would be like to pursue a post-secondary degree in a health-related field. In high school, I knew I had an interest in healthcare, however, I was unsure what types of programs I wanted to apply to. This event introduced me to the various programs one can study to obtain a career in healthcare or health research (nursing, kinesiology, medicine, etc.) and the skills that would be developed in each program. On a related note, Discovery Day introduced me to Western University's campus where I later pursued two degrees. It was monumental in shaping the trajectory of my future research endeavours.

Any advice for high school students?

I would advise high school students to pay attention to the skills and activities that spark their curiosity. While achieving high grades in certain subjects can sway the direction that you hope to pursue higher education, I invite students to note what topics energize them to learn. When actively studying a new subject, it is curiosity that fuels motivation and momentum. What compels you to want to learn more?
